The Extra Stitches

About

Hi there :)

First off some basics about me. I'm 30, I live in NSW, Australia and I have 3 babies. One 12 year old fur baby, a Chocolate Labrador called 'Digger', a 3 year old daughter and one that is currently a work in progress, expected to make their appearance in June.

My hubby can be away with the RAN (Royal Australian Navy) from time to time and it get's a bit lonely at night without him... Thus starting my knitters itch.

It's quite a long story... sort of... I think.

I remember being taught the bare basics when I was a kid when I met my Grandmother for the first time. She showed me how to cast on and do a knit stitch, but that was the extent of my knitting knowledge. My mother and Aunts knit so I guess you could say it's in the family and I should have really shown a bit more interest sooner.

But, alas no...

I wasn't until my Mother come to visit me after I had gall bladder surgery that she asked 'Do you mind getting me some needles and wool and I'll knit the baby a toy while I'm there'.

Like the good daughter I am, off I go to the nearest Spotlight to find 4mm needles, 8ply wool and a pattern. I had no idea what any of that meant. I picked a pattern that looked cute and wool in colours I liked and hoped for the best.

Mother didn't touch said wool, pattern or needles in the entire duration of her stay. She claims she had a sore wrist, I claim she just wanted me to start knitting.

A couple of weeks after mother's visit and the baby was asleep in bed I thought about the needles and wool and patterns sitting in the guest room beside table and I thought 'I wonder if I remember anything'.

Cue me attempting to cast on via the thumb method with some yellow wool. And to my surprise I remembered. I also remembered how to do a knit stitch. I thought I was a knitting superstar.

My first piece of knitting looked like this:

It may only be 10 stitches in straight garter stitch, but it was an addiction in the making

That took me an hour...

As weeks passed I tried to get clever with my knitting and I tried to attempt a purl stitch, and I learnt to cast off.

I got this...

My first cast off, complete with holes.

It looks very similar to the piece above but note the holes... To this day I have no idea what I was doing wrong. But I assure you I can purl wonderfully now.

So... In a matter of months, with the help of YouTube videos, my Mother and books from the library I went from the holey hot mess pictured above to this:

At the time, my sailor was away, so I knitted myself a substitute

So, I made this blog to track my projects and watch them grow. Hopefully you learn something out of it as well. Sharing is caring right?
